Rowing in the City

Philadelphia is a city cut by two large rivers that have some of the most beautiful vistas in the city. Taking a row along these vistas can be some of the most rewarding exercise you can get in the area.

Rowing as an exercise
Rowing is a great exercise because it strengthens muscles in your entire body with a smaller impact on your body than other exercises. The motion of the row can help to strengthen the muscles in your back and arms quickly as you use the water as resistance.
Rowing is a primarily aerobic exercise and you will defiantly feel the burn as you push off against the water.  Rowing can also replace your other aerobic exercises like running or cycling and will give you the same amount of exercise but in a much more beautiful location.
Also the winds along the rivers will keep you cool as you exercise. Just remember to bring a water bottle as hydration is important in the hot open sun of the water. Also, despite all of the fresh water around you, drinking the water of the Delaware probably isn’t a good idea.

Getting a Boat
The hardest part of rowing as an exercise is that it takes a good deal of equipment to get started. Luckily, there are plenty of people in Philadelphia that grew up in the area near the waterways and have kayaks. So get a friend (for instance, me!) who can lend you a boat. Having a local friend is also a great idea because they will most likely know the waters a little better and that’s key.
There are also several rental locations around the city.
The Fairmount Park administration also has great resources for finding boats at : http://www.fairmountpark.org/Rowing.asp

Most importantly though have fun and remember to stay safe as rowing improves your daily exercise routine.
